CXXIX. Mermaid Therapy

**Setting:** A dimly lit basement room in Battle Creek Asylum, 1976. Nautical-themed decorations adorn the walls, and a large mural of the ocean sets the scene. A circle of mismatched chairs is set up in the center.

**Characters:**
- **Nurse Chloe:** A cheerful red-haired mermaid nurse.
- **Captain Grizzlebeard:** An old pirate with a scruffy beard and an eye patch.
- **One-Eyed Willie:** A pirate with a hook for a hand who loves to complain.
- **Sailor Salty:** A grumpy pirate who misses his peg leg and feels restricted.

---

**[Scene opens with Nurse Chloe swimming gracefully into the room, her tail shimmering under the fluorescent lights.]**

**Nurse Chloe:** (cheerfully) Ahoy there, me hearties! Welcome to group therapy! I’m Nurse Chloe, and I’m here to help you navigate the stormy seas of your minds!

**Captain Grizzlebeard:** (gruffly) Arrr, what do ye know about storms? We be trapped in this asylum like fish in a barrel!

**Nurse Chloe:** (smiling) I understand it feels confining, but let’s talk about how we can sail through these challenges together!

**One-Eyed Willie:** (leaning forward) Aye, lass! But they won’t let us do anything! No sword fights, no treasure hunts—just sittin’ here talkin’ about our feelings!

**Sailor Salty:** (grumbling) And they took away my peg leg! How am I supposed to stand tall as a pirate without me trusty leg?

**Nurse Chloe:** (gently) I hear your frustrations. But expressing yourselves is important! What do you miss most about being free pirates?

**Captain Grizzlebeard:** (sighing) The thrill of the chase! The roar of cannon fire! Now they say we can’t even shout “Arrr!” without getting in trouble!

**One-Eyed Willie:** (nodding) Aye! It’s like they want us to be landlubbers instead of fierce pirates!

**Nurse Chloe:** (encouragingly) Let’s channel that pirate spirit! How about we create a pirate code of conduct—one that includes all the things you love?

**Sailor Salty:** (curious) Like what?

**Nurse Chloe:** How about rules that allow for shouting, singing sea shanties, and sharing tales of adventure?

**Captain Grizzlebeard:** (grinning) Now ye be speakin’ my language! We should have a code that lets us be angry pirates when we need to be!

**One-Eyed Willie:** (enthusiastically) Aye! And let’s include “No taking away peg legs!” in our code!

**[The pirates start brainstorming ideas for their pirate code while Nurse Chloe encourages their creativity.]**

**Nurse Chloe:** That’s it! Let your voices be heard! Remember, every storm eventually passes. Together, we can find ways to express yourselves while navigating these waters!

---

**[Scene ends with laughter and camaraderie among the pirates as they enthusiastically discuss their new pirate code, while Nurse Chloe swims around encouraging their ideas.]**
